The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents

Pratchett, Terry. The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents. While on a visit to the library, I was looking for Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett. It wasn't there, but I happened to see this one and remembered that I'd seen something about it on The Indextrious Reader.

What a smart book! Thoroughly enjoyable and both very clever and very...er...human? The characters --whether human, feline, or rodent-- are comically and seriously full of the elements of the human condition: arrogance, pride, greed, loyalty, enterprise, courage, hope. The book covers some pretty serious territory, but this Pied Piper tale is compelling, satiric, and fun! A winner!

Fiction. Fantasy. YA. 2001. 241 pages.

  1. That's one I have not read yet. Will have to find it soon.

But when you do get your hands on Wintersmith, I hope you enjoy it. I really love the Tiffany Aching series.

  2. This is superb, isn't it. And very hard to read aloud to children because you're too busy laughing to get the words out. Thanks for reminding me of it. I must go back and re-read it.

  3. Yay! I was hoping you'd like it. Is Tiffany Aching introduced? I've heard this was a lead-up to the Tiffany Aching series. I read and loved Wee Free Men and Hat Full of Sky before I learned about Amazing Maurice. Looking forward to it and Wintersmith.

If you'd like more Pratchett, may I suggest Mort.

  5. Orpheus = This is my very first Terry Pratchett, but certainly not my last! I'm eager to try the Tiffany Aching series- start to finish.

Ann - I loved that it didn't talk down to children and that the humour was smart and witty.

booklogged - No, Tiffany Aching isn't in this one, but I've read your reviews of the Wee Free Men and Hat Full of Sky. They were the instigation of my desire to read Pratchett!

Bookfool - This is one of those that appeals to all ages. :)
