Blogs, books, and sewing adventures

I've been over to So Many Books and found this list of books that interest me. I'm adding several of these titles to my wish list and will order some when I return from vacation. I've always loved Emerson, and visiting Stefanie's blog reminds of much of what I enjoyed in Emerson without having to do research myself--but sometimes, I just can't resist the desire for further reading on the Concord group: Emerson, Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, Margaret Fuller, etc.

I have a copy of Eden's Outcasts: The Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Father in my TBR stack and have been debating on whether or not to take this one with me to Florida, but it is such a big, thick hardback that it will really need to wait.

Still have a couple of books to review and hope to do that before we leave and have several stalled books -- including The Philosopher's Apprentice which I read avidly and then when almost finished, put aside and read several other books. Susan at Pages Turned is in the process of reading this one, so I'm eager to find out what she thinks.

Things around here have been hectic lately and my mood takes me from one thing to another in a pretty helter-skelter manner. I've been doing some sewing (which - like reading - provides stress relief). My quilting/sewing blog Bayou Quilts has more pics of the sewing adventures, but here are a couple of the cuffs I've been working on lately.
These little cloth shoes are for baby Bryce Eleanor.

  1. The cuffs are stunning. Thanks for reminding me about the Alcott book. Our library system has still not got a copy in. The paperback is due out and I think I'm just going to have to put my hand in bank manager's pocket.

  3. Oh, I like the cuffs.

But most of all, I like that you went gender-colour-neutral for Baby Bryce's booties. No stereotypical pink. Very well-done. :)

  4. I'm loving those cuffs!
Isn't planning which books to take on holiday so hard... You hate to end up with a "bad" book! I brought 9 books with me on vacation and so far I've lucked out with my choices :)

  7. With your love for Emerson, may I highly recommend a CD of some of his poems put to music. We bought it years ago when in Concord and I still love listening to it. Dillon Bustin did the arrangements and does the singing. Wonderful. It's available on CD or for MP3 download on amazon.com. It's a favorite for both Candleman and I.

Love your sewing projects. Especially love the little shoes for Bryce. Have a wonderful time in Florida.

  9. I would highly recommend Some Kind of Angel, a wonderful new addition to more than a century of exciting thrillers. Unique characters and plot! It definately kept me entertained on my last road trip.

    Beautiful cuffs btw!

  10. Thanks, Ann - I have such fun with stuff like this!

Just began the Alcott book this morning, and it is looking good. Mine is a library copy, but in the end, I may buy a paperback copy when they are out.

Stefanie - I'm not very far into it yet, but so far, I'm liking it and hope that the feeling will carry throughout the entire book!

Orpheus - Thanks - the cuffs are so much fun to play with when watching TV at night. I make the Dorset buttons and bead the cuffs and watch Netflix movies or favorite shows without guilt. Ahh, I like the bright and cheerful for babies much better than pastel pink or generic blue.

Iliana - It was difficult to plan which books to take, but it was a successful effort this time...and I read less than I expected. NINE! Wow! and lucked out on all of them! Good for you!

Les - They fit, too. Always a relief. The matching bubble suit I made her and the little dress I made Mila (all from that same cheerful material) fit as well. I was a happy camper!

Booklogged - Thanks for the recommendation. I love hearing the way some people interpret the poem musically!

    Carl - Thanks!

Melissa - I will definitely check it out! Thanks for the link.

  12. Mary - Thanks! I'm busy working on some new ones, but the vacation put that group way behind!

  13. We've got a couple copies of that Louisa May Alcott book at my library and I've picked it up once or twice. I'll be curious to know what you think of it when you get around to it.

  14. Lesley - I'm well into it now and enjoying it very much! It is slower reading than fiction, but a fascinating account of the time period and the Alcotts.
