Age of Legend by Michael J. Sullivan

Michael J. Sullivan excels in his world-building and character development.  Age of Legend, the fourth book in this six book series, takes place after a gap of five years from the last book and during a stalemate in the war.

Persephone takes a backseat during this book and other characters get their time in the spotlight.

Sullivan writes the kind of epic fantasy that keeps you turning the pages, engrossed in the characters and in the action.  If you decide to read the series, start at the beginning (Age of Myth) to see the character development and the beginning of the rebellion.

I started with Age of Myth in 2016.  Then--knowing that it would be at least a year until the next book, I binged on the The Riyria Revelations, starting with the Theft of Swords and was completely caught up with the characters and suspense.

Honestly, as much as I've enjoyed the books in the Age of Legends of the First Empire series, I still think my favorites are the books in The Riyria Revelations trilogy.  I still think of Royce and Hadrian   as real people.  :)

Read in May.  Blog review scheduled for July.

  1. I hate it when we've to wait for a year or two for the next book of a series to release but sometimes it's worth the wait. I just wish I'm not that forgetful when the plots (or cliffhangers in that matter) are concerned, ha.

    1. Waiting for the next entry in a series is frustrating. Some authors make it easier to get back into the characters and plots than others, though. Some books I can dive right into after a long wait--others, well, it can be a struggle.

  4. I've heard nothing but praise for the The Riyria series and lots of love for Royce and Hadrian. I am still slooowly working my way through Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings books. I need more time!!!

  5. I've thought about starting a Sullivan book since last year. I run hot and cold with SF/F books but now am feeling a pull towards them. Do you have to read the "Chronicles" series if you want to read this "Revelations" one? Are they necessary to each other-- which comes first, please?

  6. I started with Revelations: The Theft of Swords which introduces the characters. I love this summary from the blurb: "They killed the king. They pinned it on two men. They chose poorly."
