I'm still reading (and thoroughly enjoying) All Creatures Great and Small; it is a great relief to find this book as charming and humorous as it was when I first read it.
Next stack:
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke (F)
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Women Writers Explore Their Favorite Fairy Tales -Kate Bernheimer (editor) (NF)
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (F)
Without a Map: A Memoir by Meredith Hall (NF)
The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano (F)
Shadow Cities by Robert Neuwirth (NF)
Jubilee Trail (just realized it isn't in the picture) by Gwen Bristow
I just can't decide which one...or two...
I really want to read The Savage Detectives. There was an interesting article on that book on the NPR web site recently. I need to check out some of these other books I haven't heard of. Have fun deciding :)
ReplyDeletemy vote is for Inkheart! (but when you read that you will want Inkspell to follow quickly! )
ReplyDeleteI don't read a lot of fantasy, almost none, in fact, but I really did enjoy Inkheart. It was really fun.
ReplyDeleteLooks like several good choices, but I am particularly interested in Shadow Cities, now that I followed the link & read the description of it. I listened to someone talk about the Kibera slum (Nairboi) just recently and was astounded by what I heard.
ReplyDeleteInkheart! Oh, I hope you love it! I really did. And if you do, there's a sequel, Inkspell.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like more and more bloggers are reading Roberto Bolano these days.
ReplyDeleteThe temptation.
iliana - I heard the NPR review on my way home the other day!
ReplyDeleteDeslily - It is nice when you know there is a guaranteed follow-up. Inkheart's premise really interests me.
Sam - Another rec for Inkheart! Since you are not a fantasy afficionado, it must have wider appeal.
Cam - Lotus sent me this one, and I've left it languishing while reading fantasy. This interest in cities is also fueled by NPR's "Smart City"...
dew - Inkheart is really popular!
Orpheus - I'd never heard of him until the NPR review the other day. Came home and put in my Amazon order.
I read All Creatures Great and Small when I was in school. I liked them then, but I think I would appreciate the writing alot more now.
ReplyDeleteYou have some really good books on your pile!!
Looks like you have some great things to choose from. I'd like to read Inkheart, maybe with my son. But they all sound good. Decisions, decisions...
ReplyDeleteNice pile. My son has read Inkheart and enjoyed it, so I need to get to that one, some day.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy books too - your list is daunting though LOL - here from Amy's Hunt as well.
ReplyDelete'Inkheart' all the way, Jenclair. Funke changed translator between this and her earlier book and it made all the difference.
ReplyDeleteStephanie - Herriot is just a joy to read!
ReplyDeleteG. R. - Started Inkheart last night and love it so far.
Bookfool - There are so many good ones in this stack, and I want to read them all ... right now!
Larry - Thanks for visiting!
Ann - I noticed immediately how well it flowed; the translator can make all the difference!
ReplyDeleteI can so relate. I've been moving books from shelf to floor to cabinet and I keep thinking. I want to read this! I want to read that! There are so many great books already waiting. I should really never, ever buy another book.
