Quiz and Books in the Mail

You're A Prayer for Owen Meany!

by John Irving

Despite humble and perhaps literally small beginnings, you inspire
faith in almost everyone you know. You are an agent of higher powers, and you manifest
this fact in mysterious and loud ways. A sense of destiny pervades your every waking
moment, and you prepare with great detail for destiny fulfilled. When you speak, IT
SOUNDS LIKE THIS!

Take the Book Quiz
at the Blue Pyramid.

I think I need to retake this one...this is so not me. I have no sense of destiny, and I don't think I'm loud. Persistent, maybe, but not loud. And (shame-faced admission) I've never read A Prayer for Owen Meany.

I've seen the quiz posted on several blogs, but my visit to Pages Turned made me laugh at Susan's "You're Prufrock and Other Observations," and the responses at Gentle Reader's Shelf Life are also funny.

Part of my Amazon order arrived today: The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery and Elizabeth and Her German Garden by Elizabeth Von Arnim; Elizabeth of the German Garden (the biography) arrived yesterday. Also in today's mail, Among Other Things, I've Taken Up Smoking by Aoibheann Sweeney from the Penguin Group (I wonder how you pronounce Aiobheann?)

  1. This quiz marked me as an Owen Meany as well, despite the fact that I have never been able to get through a John Irving novel (just not to my taste I guess). I too felt disgruntled. :)

  2. I took the author quiz from one of the book blogs and it said I was Flannery O'Connor! Bah! :D

  3. I was Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut which only increased my shame at not having read any of his novels yet.

  4. Pour of Tor - Where did we go wrong? I suspect that I belong to "Prufrock," along with Susan. Where do you think you might belong?

Maggie - Quit messin' with me! I know you made that up! :p

Bybee - Don't you feel especially vulnerable when you haven't even read the book (or the author)? On the other hand, I've enjoyed all the conversation on various blogs this quiz has generated!

  5. Oh do read Owen Meany when you get the chance. That was one book I didn't think I'd like and thoroughly enjoyed.
I got "Lolita" on the quiz. I'll be re-taking that to see if I can get a different answer :)

  6. Well, being an "agent of higher powers" might not be so bad :)

  8. iliana - I'm sure I'll get around to it one of these days, especially as there is the curiosity aroused by the quiz. Lolita! Wow, iliana, I'm really curious about your answers.

Dorothy - :) Oh, yeah! An "agent of higher powers" isn't so bad.

Kerry - I read a post on A Fair Substitute for Heaven about The Blue Castle, I decided to order it. Turns out it made a lot of people's favorite lists!

  9. I did like Owen Meany when I read it years back, and I like the idea that "you inspire faith in almost everyone you know." But I cannot imagine you as loud in any way! I do think this quiz has inspired some humorous responses!

  10. Gentle Reader - I overcome by sheer will and persistence and rarely have to raise my voice -because nagging usually works. :)

I haven't enjoyed a quiz this much in a long time! Readers had such interesting reactions to being connected to the "wrong" book!
