On Letters and Computer Errors

Those are my principles. If you don't like them I have others. --Groucho Marx

I love letters and The Groucho Letters is a collection of letters to and from Groucho Marx. Correspondence with his brothers, T. S. Eliot, E. B. White, James Thurber...doesn't that whet your appetite?

And Frieda Kahlo's letters to her friend and doctor Leo Eloesser have been unsealed and published in Mexico as My Beloved Doctor. Kahlo and Diego Rivera are always interesting...

The above items are via Maude Newton and Laila Lalami.

Just for fun:

Haiku Error Messages -- just the first one:

Three things are certain:
Death, taxes, and lost data.

Guess which has occurred.

  1. That's such a funny quote from Groucho Marx. I look forward to your reviews of the letters you'll be reading.

  2. booklogged -- I haven't ordered them yet. I'm on a restricted book diet right now. Must finish most of the ones hanging around here before ordering more. Actually, the Marx letters sound more interesting to me because of his correspondents, but I'm always interested in Kahlo, too.

  3. I love reading letters. With the prevalence of email, I wonder if there will be any letters to read fifty years from now?

  4. Hello, Jenclair!

Frida Kahlo (her art and her life) has always fascinated me. I have seen a couple of biopics on her and also read a few biographies. Anytime there's an exhibition featuring her paintings I made sure I attend, so, of course, I would be very curious to check out this new book published in Mexico. I wasn't able to ascertain if an English translation has been made available however.

  5. stefanie -- Sad to contemplate, but true. And instead of journals, like Thoreau and Emerson, people keep blogs which will vanish into the atmosphere, no doubt.

Lotus -- I suspect that there is not an English translation yet, but with Kahlo's appeal, I'm sure there will be soon. Kahlo's art and life, fascinate me as well-- beautiful, bizarre, and exotic.
