I am looking forward to this challenge. My first book will be Season of the Witch, but after that I'm not sure which direction to take. Carl offers several variations or Perils, but I'm just going for the first Peril, and will read whatever I choose that fits the eerie, Gothic, ghostly, suspense, terror category (as determined by moi).
This is reading indulgence of the first caliber. It was great fun last year and should be even better this year! In fact, last year my reading went on after the challenge ended because November is surely a Gothic Month.

Oh, The Moonstone! The Moonstone! It's such a wonderful book! :)
ReplyDeleteI loved the Moonstone as well. It's a great story. I have his book, The Woman in White, on my RIP list. Some of these books are on my TBR list so it will be fun to read your reviews if those are the ones you choose to read.
ReplyDeleteDorothy -- The Moonstone is a definite. I read this years (and years) ago and loved it. In fact, both The Woman in White and The Moonstone were two of my favorite adolescent reads. Last year, I reread The Woman in White for this challenge (or maybe, right after the challenge) and found that it had lost nothing of its appeal!
ReplyDeleteFramed -- You will love The Woman in White, too! I just checked out your TBR list and think it is a great idea to keep track of all of the books you want to read and who recommended them.
Great list to choose from! I'll be reading Season of the Witch too. I'm looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteI still need to post my list for the RIP Challenge. Isn't it fun how Carl has added different 'Perils'? He's a clever man.
ReplyDeleteI have thought about A Great and Terrible Beauty. Haven't heard of Homebody but I like Card so I'm off to investigate that one.
Look forward to your reviews, as always.
kimy -- Never heard of Mark Kurlasky, but I'm putting him on the TBR list because 1) the title is a real come-on and 2) if it is your #1 nonfiction read, it must be good!
ReplyDeletetanabata -- My two favorite challenges are Carl's. Last fall, I reveled in gothic, suspense, and mystery, then in the spring, science fiction and fantasy. I love both genres and have been busy collecting R.I.P titles since last year's challenge.
booklogged -- Carl has such a great time that we get pulled along with him! I'll be busy writing down more titles as people begin reviewing!
Great list! I'm so excited about participating this year. I had to pass on last year's challenge and have been looking forward to this for months. It was your review of The Woman in White last year that made me put it on my TBR list and label it for this years challenge :-)
ReplyDeleteSuziQ -- :) I hope you will love it as much as I did--both times!
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to finish up a few more books before September when I can begin!
Hi Jen, I was just looking over your booklist and thought you might like an invitation to Good Reads. It's an interesting site and I've found a lot of books I might not have otherwise picked up on.
ReplyDeleteI'm so enjoying reading everyone's lists because I'm still trying to narrow down my choices! You've got a couple here that I want to read too. And, I'm going with the first Peril too.
ReplyDeleteThe Last Apprentice series is terrific! The American editions are beautiful, real works of book design art. I wish the third one would hurry up and be released on this side of the Atlantic.
ReplyDeleteAnnie -- I'll check it out!
ReplyDeleteiliana -- Reading the different lists is definitely half the fun, isn't it? Then when the reviews start, you can narrow down a bit farther!
Camille -- Oh, good! Love hearing from someone who can personally recommend it. It was on my Amazon Wish List, but I couldn't remember why or when I added it.
I've been waiting for your list! :) Almost all of these are new to me, which makes me excited (but makes my wallet scared). Except for Homebody of course, which I hope you enjoy. If you do like that one, a similar Orson Scott Card book is Treasure Box. I may like that one even more! Can't wait for your reviews!
ReplyDeleteChris -- I'm so eager to begin on this challenge since I really want to read all of these, but there are a couple of books I planned to finish before starting, so I'm going to wait until the official start date.
ReplyDeleteI understand that Homebody is a kind of haunted house novel, and I'm looking forward to it, but think I may add Treasure Box, too. Haven't read anything by Orson Scott Card in years, so appreciate your recommendation. :)
Oh boy, I just got a book announcement from HarperCollins. The next Joseph Delaney book is out now, The Last Apprentice: Night of the Soul Stealer.
ReplyDeleteCamille -- :) And another one comes out in March of 2008!
ReplyDeleteJen, I'm going to read Ghostwalk, too. And I'm waiting for the library to get A Good and Happy Child. Meanwhile, I'm getting The Thirteenth Tale and I'm reading some stories in Echoes from the Macabre by Du Maurier. This is indeed a fun challenge.
ReplyDeleteDeborah -- I don't have a copy of Ghostwalk yet; I'm going to check with the library today. You'll love The Thirteenth Tale! When I saw your list, I knew you were in for a good time.
ReplyDeleteOooh...books to browse! :)
ReplyDeleteEmma -- nice suspenseful books!
