A Combined Challenge

Here are some of the books I hope to read for Carl's Once Upon a Time II Challenge. I've decided on Quest the First because it is the most flexible.

Quest the First

Read at least 5 books that fit somewhere within the Once Upon a Time II criteria. They might all be fantasy, or folklore, or fairy tales, or mythology…or your five books might be a combination from the four genres.

I read the first in each of the following series last year for this challenge ( loved them both!) and look forward to reading the second in each series:

The Orphan's Tale: In the Cities of Coin and Spice - Catherynne Valente
Shadow Gate: Book Two of the Crossroads - Kate Elliott

Some others that I've jotted down recently when visiting other blogs in anticipation of this challenge. ~~I found another great challenge, Twisted Fairy Tales, over at Sqeaky Books (discovered by way of Connect the Plots). ~~Here are some great YA titles that will work for both challenges:

Zel - Donna Jo Napoli
A Curse Dark as Gold - Elizabeth C. Bunce
Book of a Thousand Days - Shannon Hale
East - Edith Pattou
Ever - Gail Carson Levine

I have another list of possible titles somewhere, but can't locate it right now.

Have 3 more reviews to write and some new books have arrived from FSB (thanks to Anna) and from William Morrow/Harper Collins (thanks to Christine). More about the new books later; some of them look very good.

  1. I think I am going to aim to read Catherynne Valente for this challenge too. I read her other book last year and really liked it. It would be fun to revisit her writing.

  3. I keep thinking I'm going to quit doing challenges because I have a tall pile of ARCs to read. I haven't been successful though.

  4. Kailana - I really liked In the Night Garden and hope for as good a read from this one.

Iliana - :0 Oh, our lists are going to be expanding!

Booklogged - I don't do many challenges, but I love an excuse for fantasy!

  5. I am curious about that Catherynne Valente book. I read a few of her short stories and I found her style a little difficult to get into, but so many people I respect say wonders about that book.

I really want to read Book of a Thousand Days. The others I haven't heard of, but I'll be looking forward to your reviews.

  6. nymeth - I loved In the Night Garden, an original compendium of fairy tales; I'm having a harder time getting into Cities of Coin and Spice, however. Maybe it is just me; sometimes I'm just not in the mood for a particular kind of writing.

  7. How hilarious! I walked into the bookstore today and saw In the Cities of Coin and Spice and had to bring it home with me. I should pick up the first to read but in some ways I am hoping/wishing I can just jump into this one as it looks so awesome. Love your list and am so glad you're participating.

  8. Carl - In the Night Garden tells about the girl with the writing all over her and the young prince who discovers her in the garden. So far, Cities hasn't done much to explain the back story of the previous book, but the individual stories she tells (from the text on her body) can stand alone.
