Here is something that many of you are already aware of but that is pretty important, I think. Terry Pratchett has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. As my family has been going through the grief attached to this disease (our father), I was surprised at how much it hurt a while back to discover that Pratchett had been diagnosed with AD. Here is a link to a website, Match It For Pratchett that may be of interest to some of you Pratchett fans out there. An excellent cause.
Trying again to get caught up on reviews. Have finished two and have two more to go. Also have several (not sure how many) books in progress.
I've received more ARCs from Anna, including The Stone Gods by Jeannette Winterson that I'm looking forward to reading...soon. Also from Anna of FSB, a lovely copy of Peace: 50 Years of Protest by Barry Miles, a lovely coffee table book with great photographs.I know just the person for the Peace book; as soon as I saw the cover, her name came to mind. I've been browsing through it, and will hopefully finish soon and get it in the mail to her.
As one of the frustrated individuals who cannot access AOL Mail, I'm wondering just what has happened. That's a big OOOPS for you AOL--after reading the message board, I do realize that I'm not the only one.
There will have to be another book give-away soon. I'm trying to make room for more books...
That is such sad news about Terry Pratchett. I hate that anyone has to suffer from AD.
ReplyDeleteMy little 4-yr-old granddaughter has an imaginary pink house. She's all the time saying things like, "In my pink house there's a pony." or "I own that movie in my pink house."
If I had a pink house there would be no disease or horrible illnesses.
Thanks for the Pratchett link! The Winterson book looks good and the Peace book looks great.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to what you think of The Stone Gods. I read the UK proof last year and it felt watered down compared to her earlier works.
ReplyDeleteI had heard that news about Terry Pratchett recently. I'm so sad for him and for his family. My family is going through this as well. My 83-year-old father has been in an Alzheimer care facility for a year now. It is a wretched, wretched disease that is just gut-wrenching. My thoughts and prayers are with your father and you and your family, Jenclair, and also with the Pratchett family.
ReplyDeleteBooklogged -
ReplyDeleteGiven Terry Pratchett's career and his early diagnosis, he is able to make a big impact by coming forward.
Stefanie - I really liked Winterson's Weight: The Myth of Atlas and Heracles which I read last year about this time.
orpheus - I'll let you know as soon as I can to it. There are just so many in the stack! I'm almost through with the Lama Surya Das book, though, which I've ended up taking in small bites and digesting a bit at a time. Which of his books did you say you'd read?
Kay - It is a dreadful disease, and my thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family as well.
oh my I just finished comment on my attempts to control, but it does look like I might have to go for miles book one of these days!!! along with kids books my other weakness is books rich with photos!
