New Moon

Meyer, Stephenie. New Moon. I just realized that in a previous post, I said I'd finished Twilight--which I did, in February of 2006--but I meant New Moon. It took me a long time to get around to the second book in Meyer's series, over two years.

New Moon didn't involve me as much as Twilight did. I did like the further development of Jacob, but Bella still seems so -- unformed. She can't understand what Jacob and Edward see in her and finds it difficult to believe that they care for her. And I do, too; she just doesn't seem capable of inspiring the devotion she does.

Edward is not present during much of the book. He is there at the beginning, then disappears, as does the entire Cullen family. He reappears at the end, but the last section with Edward felt forced and silly.

I can see how this one would continue to attract its target audience of young adults; I had no problem reading it, was not tempted to put it down and go on to something else, but didn't find it much to talk about, either.

Fiction. Supernatural/YA. 2006. 563 pages.

  1. I loved the first one. Wasn't very taken with the second one (but still gobbled it up quickly) and had to force my way through the third one. I doubt that I'll read the fourth one...at least until I read reviews of it. But if she ever does release a version of Twilight told from Edward's point of view I'd snap that up in a second.

  2. I did enjoy it but not as much as Twilight. I much prefer Jason to Edward which became even more apparent in the thired book Eclipse. Will be interesting to see what the film version of Twilight is going to be like...

  3. Sassy - Oh, dear! Having to force your way through the 3rd one is a shame, but thanks for letting me know!

  4. Rhinoa - That seems to be the general opinion. Actually, I'll bet the film will be good...maybe make the characters more 3 dimensional :)

  5. I can't keep those books straight, although I've read the first. Whichever that was. It seems like your reaction is pretty common, which makes me wonder if I should bother to read the 2nd in the series. I could just keep rereading the 1st, I guess, if I crave a sweet romance with a few scary paranormal scenes.

  6. bookfool - I'm not even sure how many there are now in this series, but I won't be in any hurry. They do have the best covers though!

  7. The fourth book is coming out this summer but I won't be rushing out to get it. I thought New Moon was ok but was really disappointed by Eclipse. Do you think you'll continue reading in the series?

  8. iliana - I will read the next ones only if I happen to see them on the shelf at the library, but I won't go looking for them.

  9. This series is definitely losing its lustre with each successive book that comes out. I bought New Moon after reading a library copy of Twilight, but then waited for several months for a library copy of Eclipse to become available, and will do the same when the next one comes out. At this point, I'm more committed to reading it because I've read the first three rather than any overwhelming interest in what happens to the characters. Although I keep hoping Bella wakes up and gets a backbone and some self-esteem!

  10. Lesley - A promising beginning, but seemingly most people have been disappointed in the following installments.

  11. These books are SO hot with the younger reader. I have not read them but my 20 year old daughter loves them. Another co-worker, in her 20's, is crazy about Stephenie Meyer. I have to admit, they do not appeal to me. Meyer has written her first adult book, The Host, which just came out about a week ago.

  12. Deborah - I definitely enjoyed the first one more than the second, and I really have no more interest in the series. However, I'd would like to try The Host, especially if it is written for adults.
