Of Interest to Me

Reading Is Fundamental

One example of some wonderful pics...

Media Influence on our kids.

Pretty scary!  This also is a problem with some YA books.  Believe me, I don't want to go back to puritan standards by any means, but when the content of the media that reaches so many children presents these messages, the results can be devastating.

Holy Angels Residential Facility  (much more positive!)

My daughter is involved with Holy Angels
and whenever she talks about it, her face brightens.

    1. It is such a shame that advertisers rely on such messages offends me. These images don't reflect the world until after they have manipulated it. Whether through advertising, art, or literature, we are influenced by the messages. Images and messages that are aimed at children and young people should be more responsible.

  3. Thanks for sharing, Jenclair! Honestly I'm always wary of the videos on YouTube because you wouldn't know what the things the children would pick up from there, though some of the videos are educational and informative though. We just have to be attentive of what they're watching.

    1. I wish more videos, music, and literature would put effort into sending messages that are educational, informative, and positive!

  4. Good post, really interesting. I am in agreement with that girl power video. Seriously, we need to let our young girls and women know that they should not depend on males for their security and self-worth, and let young boys know that the days of treating women as inferior or objects to ogle should be long gone. Thanks for posting.

    1. The importance of educating boys and young men to have more respect for girls and women is often neglected, isn't it? And despite parents who try to give their daughters a sense of self-worth, media messages that tout beauty and sex often take precedence.

  5. I'm with you about the direction YA novels are taking...it's sad. And a little frightening, too. Love the top picture. So cute! If only all kids were that engrossed in reading good books.

    1. It isn't that YA novels shouldn't reflect some of the reality of life, but that certain YA books have such a skewed version. I'm tired of novels for young people that emphasize appearance and sexual experience over intellect, common sense, and integrity.

  6. Powerful video on the media. I remember showing Killing Us Softly to my college students when I taught because without awareness, you can't begin to combat the problem. I have a friend whose adult child was just accepted at Holy Angels and they are so pleased. I'm anxious to see it, it's been years and years since I was out there.

    1. The Killing Us Softly videos are a great example of how things have changed and remained the same, aren't they?

I'm sure your friend's child will be happy at Holy Angels!

  7. I worry about the influence of media and such on my daughter as she grows. I can only hope that the foundation I am helping her build and the guidance I give her is enough to help her maneuver through our society and any influences out there. I want her to be able to think for herself, make smart choices, learn from her mistakes, and be a good, productive person.

I am not familiar with Holy Angels, but it sounds wonderful.
