Until It's Over by Nicci French

I recently received Until It's Over from NetGalley.  I like Nicci French and have read several of the husband and wife team's books.  When I started reading it, I was surprised that it felt so familiar.  The first part was pretty good, but Part II was much less so...and repetitive as a character recounts the same events from a different perspective.  After I finished, I noted that the book was first published in 2007, and sure enough, I read it in 2010.  New cover and republished , but I read it about 1500 books ago,  I didn't remember enough to know what happened, but just enough that it seemed familiar.

Anyway, it isn't the best of this team's offerings.  I've liked a number of their stand-alones, but my favorites are their Frida Kline books.

NetGalley/Harper Collins
Mystery/Thriller.  2007, 2020.  Print length:  376 pages.

I have several book reviews scheduled:  Shadows of the Dead by Spencer Kope, An Inconvenient Woman by Stephanie Buelens, You Can't Catch Me by Catherine McKenzie, Stranger in the Lake by Kimberly Belle.  As much as I love NetGalley, it is frustrating to get the books so far in advance of publication.  It is so easy to delay writing a post when the book won't be published for months.

Such an irony that one of my 2020 goals was to get out more.  Now, I'm lucky to be able to go pick up groceries, but I am appreciating walking in the neighborhood and checking out the flower beds and the robins searching for worms.

My big event yesterday was cleaning pollen and dust off everything on the porch, then celebrating Cinco de Mayo a little early with a margarita.

This post on Twitter is inspiring!

(My husband does help with the dishes.  I just have to wash them again later when he does.)

  2. Loved the laugh, Jenclair! Yes, several of the books you mentioned are on my TBR list for when they are published. I love the Frieda Klein series too and was sad that it came to an end. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

  3. Lol! I'm grateful that my husband loads and empties the dishwasher. I wash the items that don't fit and he dries. We've been doing this for over 30 years!

  4. I took over the dishwashing chore about six months ago, and it was probably two months before I could regularly pass my wife's inspection. Seriously... But it worked because either she gave up or I got better. :-)

What you say about NetGalley is a pet peeve of mine, too. I have had one on my shelf for two months that is not getting published until October because I wanted to grab it before all the galleys were given out. I haven't read it yet because if I read it too early, I'll tend to put off writing the review for so long that I'll forget the details of the book. All in all, this makes me ask for fewer and fewer NetGalley books.

    1. I haven't read the ones due out in Oct. yet, but I hate waiting. Some publishers hold off on granting access to closer to publication--I wish more would do that or not put them on Netflix six months in advance.

:) Good for you on the dish washing scene, Sam!

  5. I laughed at your post! To be fair my husband does most of the cooking and washing up, and it is more likely that I won't reach his dishwashing standards but never mind!

    1. My husband does a lot of the cooking, too, which is why I quietly re-wash or transfer things to the dishwasher. I'm grateful for his efforts in all areas. :)

  6. Haha.. that twitter post is a hoot. I am lucky to have a husband who enjoys cooking and does most of the cleaning too. I can see why that is a pet peeve of yours regarding Netgalley. If I kept up with reviews maybe it would be mine too but I'm still trying to get through reviews form years ago. Goodness.

    1. :) The cartoon is funny, and I love the story on Twitter about the girl and the post office response to her letter!

  7. I'm excited to hear that Catherine McKenzie has a new book out. And I'm looking forward to reading Stranger in the Lake; I'll read this soon after I've finished my current book. And that Twitter post is hilarious.

    1. Keeping up with all the books requires some scheduling, doesn't it? :)

  8. Practically all my reading comes from Netgalley. I'd like a small clarification. If a book comes with a late publication date say October does it mean that the review if the book is read now in May cannot be sent to Netgalley and review posted on Goodreads. I know Amazon will not accept the review till publication date but I am uncertain of the other two.

    1. When I scheduled the review for my blog, I go ahead and send it to NetGalley and Goodreads. So the reviews have sometimes been there for months before the blog review posts. The Nicci French review was originally scheduled for later, but when I realized it was originally published in 2007, I went ahead with the post. :)

  9. Funny tweet. Ironic how your goal for 2020 was to get out more. I sure am enjoying reading these days, I just finished Anne Perry's Southampton Row and am beginning Louise Penny's Glass Houses.
