Gaslighting
For those of us who love mysteries and psychological thrillers, this article is about gaslighting in psychology. There are actually a surprising number of articles about gaslighting, a fact that makes me a little uneasy.
Gaslighting is one of the creepiest and most sinister forms of manipulation, and I can think of several novels that have made great use of the technique. The first ones that came to mind:
The Breakdown by B.A. Harris
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney

ReplyDeleteBooks with gaslighting as a plot point? Surely I've read a few but the only thing that comes to mind is Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier (Mrs. Danvers vs the unnamed narrator).
:) I've read several of the ones on that list of 35, mostly the YA selections. When it comes to fantasy, there are a lot of "mighty girls."

The only recent book I've read that I can think of is The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn. I really enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read The Woman in the Window, but it has been on my list. I should do something about that soon, especially thinking about gaslighting.

DeleteI think I'd include The Girl On The Train in the gaslighting group. I agree that it is indeed quite creepy. Of course, there are many movies that include it as well.
ReplyDeleteAnother one I haven't read. Did you like it? It's a strange thing, but of the three I listed, I only liked The Breakdown. Gone Girl and The Girl Before were creepy, but I didn't "like" them.
DeleteI did like it, with reservations. The main character was struggling with alcohol and sometimes (due to people in my family that had the same) I have a hard time reading certain books with that component. I liked it better after I finished it.
