The Unlucky Ones by Kerry Wilkinson

I'm happy to have had another Jessica Daniel mystery from Kerry Wilkinson.

from description:  A man who survived being drowned ends up in Manchester’s canal. Someone who was hit by a car is shoved in front of DC Archie Davey’s patrol vehicle.

Killers generally aren’t a happy bunch but this particular one seems to have a problem with second chances.

In The Unlucky Ones, not only is someone making sure that those who barely escape death on one occasion, die the way they were "intended"--but maybe taking things one at a time is too darned slow.

Jessica also has another problem to solve.   The Lees Estate has been particularly troublesome in the past, but about eight months ago crime reports suddenly began slowing down.  Now, the estsate is almost crime free, and Jessica is suspicious of the sudden lapse in criminal activity and of a man who seems to have unusual control over the estate.  He moved in at about the same time things on the estate improved, but isn't that a good thing?

This series begins with The Killer Inside and introduces some of the characters who continue throughout the series.  Not only Jessica, but secondary characters, are three-dimensional and convincing in their roles.

  1. Another series I really want to try! I just wish my stupid library had all of Wilkinson's Jessica Daniel's mysteries. But they only have her Silver Blackthorn trilogy, and I'm not sure I want to read it.

    1. I haven't read any of the Silver Blackthorn books, but I do love his police procedurals. Kerry Wilkinson is a man, by the way, but he does a good job with Jessica Daniel.

  2. That whole killer making sure people meet their fated deaths is an interesting premise!

  3. Another new series to check out. And I share the same sentiment with Lark; and sometimes it's hard to find the first few book of the series. This is one reason why I often jump into the middle of a series, haha.

    1. Some books are easier to begin at any time, and I jump in whenever I see a book I think I'll like. Then, if I like it, I go back and pick up earlier books. :)

  4. I wonder what is going on at the Lees Estate. I would be rather suspicious too. And I'm curious about a killer who goes after people who almost died before. I will gave to give this series a try.

  5. An interesting premise, and I like books with unusual plots. I too will give up on getting my hands on an author's back list and just jump in. Then if I like it I may purchase earlier books through Better World Books or other resources.
