Ghost Walk
Stott, Rebecca. Ghost Walk. I so wanted to enjoy this novel, but I didn't. Another one that felt cold from the beginning and had no characters that could really reach me. It felt complicated rather than complex; the first person narration, never a favorite, annoyed me; the technique of using second person to address her lover annoyed me; each of the 3 "entangled" story lines felt contrived and all annoyed me. Other than that, the things that bothered me involve spoilers.
I always dislike writing a review of a book that disappoints, but especially when most people seemed to have liked it.
Fiction. Mystery/supernatural. 2007. 284 pages.

Love that line - It felt complicated rather than complex. I'm not sure I can wrap my brain around complicated right now.
ReplyDeletegood to hear an alternate view on the book. I've heard good things about it as well, but still had doubts. now I know to wait til I can check it out from a library. if I'm every desperate for something to read.
ReplyDeleteOh...that's too bad! I have this on my TBR pile. I hate it when a book doesn't live up to expectations. It's just so disappointing!
ReplyDeleteI almost picked this one up at the library the other day... It does sound interesting but that's too bad it was disappointing. I will leave it on my tbr list and if I ever get to it I'll let you know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteBooklogged -- I just couldn't stay interested. :p
ReplyDeleteTonya -- I priced it on Amazon, but eventually left it off the order and checked it out from the library. I'm really glad I did because I liked the books I ordered much better!
Stephanie -- I think I'm in the minority on this one, so don't take my opinion too seriously!
iliana -- I'd be interested in hearing what you think...if you get around to it!
I have to agree with you. I really wanted to love this book but couldn't. I suppose intially the title of the book caused me to expect something that never really materialized within the book. I was hoping for a simple sometimes sinister ghost story and instead got something completely different, something that left me completely disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those who loved this book, but my reading group was pretty much evenly divided about it - which makes for much better discussion than if you all agree.
ReplyDeleteVintage Writer -- Thanks for letting me know I'm not completely alone in my reservations. I don't mind not loving a book that everyone else loves, but feel very uncomfortable when I really dislike one that others feel so strongly about.
ReplyDeleteAnn -- I know. Divided discussion does make for more interesting discussion. I couldn't discuss so many aspects about this book because it involved spoilers, but really wanted to argue my point as I read. Now, I'm glad just to be through with it and no longer feel the need to explain my reasons for disliking it. Which still leaves me a bit uncomfortable with the fact that I found it tedious when so many loved it...
I also tried this one; thought it sounded good. But I couldn't maintain any interest in it, and left off halfway.
ReplyDeleteMelanie -- It took me forever to finish because I couldn't maintain my interest.
